Dallas became an incorporated city in 1856 and is now the eighth largest city in the United States.  The city of Dallas is one of the financial hubs of the United States and the world.  The Dallas economy is based on telecommunications, commerce, computer based technologies, oil and oil exploration, transportation and energy.  The city of Dallas is a major hub for transportation and is the largest inland city without access to a seaport.  The city has an extensive railway system and one of the busiest airports in the world (the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport).  Dallas is rich in historical significance and was claimed by the Spanish, France, Mexico and the United States even though at one time in 1839 it was declared an independent nation.

Like most cities Dallas was founded on a river.  The city sits on the Trinity River which serves as Dallas’s major water way.  Though the Trinity River serves no useful purpose for commerce, in recent years it has been improved to be a riverfront park that when completed will be one of the largest urban parks in the world.  The project dubbed the Trinity River Project is projected to be completed in within the decade.  The project will boast lakes, parks, walking trails and vibrant green spaces for use by the community.  The cities other recreation area a reservoir known as White Rock Lake is an area used by recreationalist of all ilk’s.  The lake area includes the Dallas Arboretum and The Botanical Gardens.  The lake itself is fed by the White Rock Creek, which then feeds into the Trinity River.  There are several other lakes and recreational areas surrounding the city which take up approximately 45 miles of the cities over 380 plus square miles.

Dallas has a very mild non seasonal climate except for the summers that can be some of the hottest temperatures in the country.  The fall and spring months are mild to very mild with winters usually being very mild though Dallas does receive limited snow annually with accumulations during the winter averaging about 2.5 inches.  During the winter months Dallas can also have cold winter storms that bring freezing rains that may cause severe transportation restrictions due to slippery road conditions.  Because Dallas sits on a flat plain the cities weather is subject to temperature and climate extremes because without any mountainous terrain the city is wide open to arctic weather system extremes.  Spring time in Dallas is quite pleasant with very mild temperatures; however during this time the city can see some violent storms that enter the area at that time of year.  Weather patterns in the spring can bring thunder and lightning storms along with very strong winds and rain.  Hail and tornados can also develop during the spring months because the city sits in the center of Tornado Alley a geographic area of violent storms that run from northern Texas all the way up into the northern most regions of South Dakota.  Fall weather is quite the same, with the exception of any significant storms during the autumn months.

Dallas is writhe with museums, performing arts centers and cultural centers.  Dallas has several art districts within the city and several prominent museums including the Dallas Museum of Arts.  Dallas is home to several fledgling artists and has committed a city office committed to the development of the cultural arts.  The Office of  Cultural Affairs operates several cultural centers throughout the city and helps fund artist, public arts projects and theatres as well as a radio station featuring classical music.

Dallas was an important hub of commerce for both the farm and stock trade in its beginnings, primarily due to the extensive railway systems that ran through the city.  The cotton trade has also played an important role in Dallas’s rise to prominence as a world markets.  Later in its history oil and oil production became another mainstay of the Dallas economy making it an important hub of the petroleum industry.  Dallas later became a central hub for technology and telecommunications with nearly six thousand companies dedicated to this market in the Dallas area.  Dallas has had both real estate booms and busts in the last few decades.  However, do to this building booms and busts; the city is weathering the current economic housing turndown better than most other cities. The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and metropolitan area is home to the third largest concentration of fortune 500 companies at 29.

Dallas is one of the few major cities in the United States that has a minority majority population with over 54% of the population being non-white.  A large portion of the population is either black or Hispanics with a number of the population being from another country altogether.  The city has always had a large Hispanic community dating back to its beginnings and the Hispanic community continues to grow to this day.  Blacks and Hispanics tend to live in the southern suburbs of the city and whites tend to live in the northern part of the city.  The cities diverse population contributes to its southwestern charms and its diverse cultural arts.
