Detroit History
Fort Detroit fell to the British during the French and Indian War in 1760 and was renamed Fort Detroit and did not become part of the United States until 1796. As with many major cities Detroit was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1805. The city also was occupied by the British during the war of 1812 and remained so for a year when it was recaptured by the United States. In 1815 Detroit became an incorporated city. Detroit has a rich history that is filled with many unique facts about the area and its people. The city was a major component of the Underground Railroad that helped African Americans flee the south. It also is home to the famed Iron Brigade a regiment lead by General Custer that was key to the success at the battle of Gettysburg. Later after the death of Abraham Lincoln, Custer delivered a eulogy on behalf of the fallen President in Detroit.
The city was rife with mansions and architecture that gave it the distinction of being one of the most modern cities during the 1800 and 1900’s. The city was a major transportation hub with manufacturing and shipping being a mainstay of its economy for decades. The first mass produced automobile invented by Henry Ford was produced in Detroit. The company arose from the carriage trade that had called Detroit home.
