Detroit Explored

Detroit is known as the automobile center of the world.  It is also famous for its impact on music throughout the world.  The motor city is synonymous with vehicle manufacturing and the world famous “Mo Town” sound.  Detroit is the only city in the United States that looks south toward our northern neighbor Canada.  The city is located on the Detroit River and is located north of Windsor Ontario.  The city has spawned several major musicians, brand named automobiles and R&B, blues and rock acts with the likes of the Jackson 5 and Bob Segar and the Silver Bullet Band.

The city of Detroit has seasonal climates with frigid winters and warm to hot summers the temperature extremes can go from temps in the winter to 10 degrees F.  to over 90 degrees F.  in the summer.  The city receives its fair share of precipitation with an average monthly rainfall of 2-4 inches. Detroit is America’s eleventh largest city, though at one time it held the distinction of being the fourth largest city in the United States.  The city was named after the Detroit River that which gained its name from the French meaning the straight of Lake Erie.  The area was settled by the French in 1701, and given the name Fort Ponchartrain du Detroit.  The city still celebrates its French heritage till this day upon its city flag.  

Detroit History

Fort Detroit fell to the British during the French and Indian War in 1760 and was renamed Fort Detroit and did not become part of the United States until 1796.  As with many major cities Detroit was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1805.  The city also was occupied by the British during the war of 1812 and remained so for a year when it was recaptured by the United States.  In 1815 Detroit became an incorporated city.  Detroit has a rich history that is filled with many unique facts about the area and its people.  The city was a major component of the Underground Railroad that helped African Americans flee the south.  It also is home to the famed Iron Brigade a regiment lead by General Custer that was key to the success at the battle of Gettysburg.  Later after the death of Abraham Lincoln, Custer delivered a eulogy on behalf of the fallen President in Detroit.

The city was rife with mansions and architecture that gave it the distinction of being one of the most modern cities during the 1800 and 1900’s.  The city was a major transportation hub with manufacturing and shipping being a mainstay of its economy for decades.  The first mass produced automobile invented by Henry Ford was produced in Detroit.  The company arose from the carriage trade that had called Detroit home.  Fords decision to make Detroit the home of the Ford Motor Company lead to other automobile pioneers to locate their companies within the city as well, such notables as Packard, Chrysler, Cadillac and Dodge.

Detroit has had a storied history of labor derisions, crime, drugs, riots and discourse which caused the city to be in a constant state of flux.  Many problems within the country had a compounded impact on the city such as the oil crisis of the 70’s labor issues of the mid century and the influx of a diverse population in competition for jobs brought about many tensions that lead to the “White Flight” from the area.  The city underwent many changes during this period of time which was known as the cities so called Renaissance Period which resulted in the rebuilding of the downtown area including the now famous Renaissance Center.

Detroit Culture

The city began to rebuild the downtown area and destroyed many of the abandoned structures which caused several large areas of urban prairie.  Some of these areas began to be developed during the 1990’s with the building of many of the casinos in Detroit and several commercial structures like the Comerica Tower.  During the 2000’s the city continued this trend with the construction of the downtown stadiums for the Tigers and the Lions.  With the advancement of culture to the downtown area the city has been able to attract many hosted events such as the Super Bowl, the NCAA finals, the World Series, the MLB All Star game, and Wrestle Mania just to name a few.

The Detroit River Walk began development in 2007 which includes miles of parklands and fountains.  Along with the river walk and its development is the development of upscale condominiums as well as other commercial enterprises which has lead to the new Renaissance of the Detroit downtown area.  The city’s focus is on rehabilitating the city and bringing a greater degree of tourism to the area.

Detroit’s Motown Records brought the sounds of Detroit to the rest of America and endeared the Motown R&B sound into the lexicon of American culture.  The label is recognized for such talented acts as Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross and the Supremes as examples.  Motown brought their sound to the rest of the country and endeared the black culture and its sound to many segments of the American culture which lead to Detroit’s status among legendary music cities.

Its reputation as a center of music culture influenced many other music legends that began to arise from the neighborhoods of Detroit including such notables as Bob Segar, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper and Rare Earth just to name a few followed by punk rockers like the Necros and the Meatmen.  With the arrival of hip hop, Detroit has also produced a number of artists that have influenced the national music scene with such names as Eminem, who has racked up record breaking sales.  Kid Rock and Uncle Kracker also hail from this legendary music city.

Detroit Sports

Detroit is in the rare company of only 13 other United States cities that play host to teams from all four major sports.  The city hosts the Detroit Tigers of MLB, The Detroit Lions of the NFL, The Detroit Pistons of the NBA and the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL.   The city has won dozens of sports Championships in its history and has been title both the “City of Champions” and “Sports City USA”.  Along with its sports teams many athletes who have hailed from Detroit have won championships and gained the national spotlight, the list includes Joe Louis, Eddie Tolan, Sgt. Slaughter, Rick Steiner and Gar Wood.

Detroit Economics
