Indianapolis Explored

The city of Indianapolis was designed by Alexander Ralston who apprenticed under Pierre L’Enfant who was the designer of Washington DC.  Due to this apprenticeship the original layout of the city was similar to that of the DC area.  The layout allowed the city to become known as the “Crossroads of America due to its roadway system that were lead out of the city in all directions.  With the introduction of the railroad in 1847, the city was able to go through a period of rapid growth.  The city was given its name by Jeremiah Sullivan and its literal translation is Indiana City. 

Though the city enjoyed significant growth through the middle of the 20th century, however mid century racial tensions lead to decades of white flight and urban decay.  During the 90’s the city invested in revitalization plans that continue to this day.  The city’s investment in the downtown area through the creation of the Circle center and other business district projects has lead to a rejuvenation of the city and its economy.  With heavy investments being made and the building of the new football stadium and Convention Center, the city continues to enjoy a growing economic improvement.

Indianapolis Weather

Indianapolis enjoys seasonal weather patterns with cool cold winters, mild fall and spring weather and hot humid summers.  The spring season though can be less than mild with temperatures sometimes being unpredictable with low temperatures in March and April plunging as low as thirty degrees.  The city sees an annual rainfall of around 41 inches with a significant amount of precipitation falling in the spring and summer months.

The city is comprised of a largely white population, with about 64% of the populace being white and 26% being black and 7% being Hispanic, the rest of the population is comprised of Asians, pacific Islanders and a small population of Yugoslavian immigrants.  A study conducted by the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee conclude that the city of Indianapolis is the most racially integrated city of all northern cities in the United States with over 25% of the population living in communities of both black and white races.

Indianapolis boasts a very rich cultural heritage due to several initiatives that government has instituted to increase the cultural and artist appeal of the city.  Indianapolis has six official cultural districts including Broad Ripple Village, Fountain Square, White River State Park, Massachusetts Avenue, Indiana Avenue and The Wholesale District.  Much attention has been paid to the revitalization of these areas in order to broaden their appeal to both residence and tourist.

Indianapolis has the Indianapolis Cultural Trail under construction which is a bicycle and pedestrian path that will link the city’s downtown neighborhoods and five cultural centers along with entertainment and art venues.  The path will offer benches, lighting, cycling shops and other amenities that will encourage tourism and family entertainment.  The city also has at its center Monument Circle at the intersection of Market and Meridian streets.  The circle contains the massive Soldier and Sailors Monument which is 274 feet tall.  Indianapolis host many conventions and festivals annually that draw hundreds of thousands of people to the city every year.

The city is also home to the Indianapolis 500 which is considered to be the most important sporting event of the year with the largest attendance annually of any sporting event in the world.  The Brickyard 400 is a NASCAR event that is held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and that event has the highest attendance of all of the NASCAR events held anywhere.  The city is known for having the greatest race venues in the world.  The O’Reilly Raceway Park is home to the NHRA Mac Tool U.S. Nationals, which is the largest and most prominent, drag race in the world. Along with its racing popularity, the city is also home to the successful Indianapolis Colts of the esteemed NFL and the Indiana Pacers of the NBA.  The city also has a professional women’s basketball team, the Indiana Fever of the WNBA.
