Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States behind only New York City with a metropolitan population of nearly thirteen million people. The city was founded in 1781by then Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve. The city changed from Spanish rule to Mexican rule in 1821 following Mexico’s independence from Spain. Twenty-seven years later after the Mexican-American war, California was purchased from Mexico making California and the city part of the United States. Los Angeles was settled over a thousand years ago by Native American and was not discovered by Europeans until the mid 16th century, where the area was claimed by Spain as part of the Spanish Empire. The area was settle by Spanish missionaries in 1771 given the name El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Río de Porciúncula which translates to “The town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels on the Porciúncula River”. In 1821 the town became part of Mexico and remained so until the United States made claim to the area in 1847 after many skirmishes lead to the Treaty of Cahuenga after the Mexican-American War.
Los Angeles History
During the late 1800’s the city’s population began to explode with the arrival of the railroads and later the discovery of oil in the area. The city continued to grow into the 1900’s with a population over one hundred thousand which began to have an effect on the city’s water supply, bringing about the construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct which was completed early in the century. During the early twentieth century both the aviation and movie industries took hold in Los Angeles which further encouraged growth in the area bringing the population to over one million by the early 1930’s.
During that period in 1932 the city of Los Angeles hosted the Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the X Olympiad. Due to the Great Depression many of the athletes from around the world could not make the trip to Los Angeles and few than half of the athletes in attendance at the games held in Amsterdam in 1928 made the games. Herbert Hoover then President of the United Stated did not attend the games which made him the first head of state ever to not attend the games held in his country. The city held the Olympics again in 1984 and both Olympiads held in the city are the only Summer Olympic events ever held that turned a profit for the hosting city.

The city also sits on many fault lines and is subjected to frequent earthquakes though most of the quakes are minor and never felt. The city has had its share of major quakes over the years which have caused extensive damage and loss of life. Los Angeles also runs the risk of tsunamis from seaquakes which have occurred in the city’s history.

Los Angeles enjoys 320 days of sunshine per year with a warm dry summer season that can occasionally get hot, however the average temperature is around 79 degrees from May till October. The winter season is usually mild with many days of rain and temperatures in the high 60’s to low 70’s. Los Angeles can have days that can get hot in the summer though with temperatures reach the hundreds and cold days in the winter where temperatures can sink into the low 40’s, but on average seasonal weather is rather mild.

Los Angeles also has two powerhouse championship college teams in Division I college football with the UCLA Bruins and the USC Trojans. Two teams that are associated with Los Angeles and are within the metropolitan area are the Anaheim Ducks of the NHL and the Los Angeles Angels of MLB.
