New York History

New York came from humble beginnings, founded as a Dutch fur trading post name New Amsterdam. When the Dutch lost New Amsterdam to the British in 1664, it was renamed New York in honor of the Duke of York. During the American Revolutionary War, many battles were fought in and around New York City and it took until 1783 to end the British occupation of the city. New York City became the nation’s capital with George Washington becoming the first President of the United States of America.

Due to mass immigration, New York became the largest city in the United States as well as a haven for a large free black population. In 1789 the first United States Congress and Supreme Court were established in the City. The city continued to grow well into the 20th century and had become the World center for commerce, industry and communication. In the early 1920’s New York City surpassed London as the largest city in the world and just a decade later became the first Megacity. During the 20th century New York became a dominate political power house as well with it being decided that the United Nations would be located there.

The City has undergone many disasters including a fire that destroyed near a quarter of the city in the late 1700’s, the worst riot in American history in the late 1800’s and several bouts with yellow fever throughout its history. The city was also the epicenter of the Great Depression. The city has also undergone several economic slowdowns in the 60’ and 70’s which is occurring again in the late 2000’s.
