Orlando Explored
Orlando became a city in 1885 as a center for citrus growing in central Florida. Orlando is best known for its world class attractions like Disney World, the Universal Orland Resort and Sea World. Many believed this to be left as a marker of his gravesite. Another belief is that the city came by its name from one of Shakespeare’s famous plays. The city soon became the county seat of the new Orange County in 1856 and suffered greatly during the Union blockade during the Civil War. During the reconstruction the city underwent explosive population growth that brought about its establishment as a city in 1885. The city became the center of Florida’s citrus industry until the Great Freeze brought about the consolidation of my independent citrus grove owners into the hands of the citrus barons who moved their operations further south of the city.
Orlando became a popular resort area during World War I and underwent significant growth until the mid to late twenties until the Great Depression and a bevy of hurricanes brought and end to its early housing boom. However, during World War II many Air Force bases where established in the area along with several defense contract companies including Lockheed Martin. McCoy AFB was established became home to SAC operations for the 306th Bombardment Wing which operated several major aircraft of that era during the war. During this period, several airmen came to stay in the area and raise their families.
The event that really changed the Orlando landscape however, was the announced plans by Walt Disney to locate Walt Disney World in the area. The building of the amusement park brought economic and population explosions that forever change the economic structure of the area. Orlando over the course of the last three decades of the twentieth century became the vacation capital of the world with more entertainment venues than any place in the world. Due to the city’s proximity to Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space center the city has also become a draw for many high tech companies. Further improving the city’s economic future was the building of the Orlando international airport at the site of the closed McCoy AFB. The airport has become the ninth busiest airport in the United States. The city of Orlando lies in a low wetland area and the city is generally flat. The heat and humidity along with the city’s low lying geography allow storms from the Gulf of Mexico to roll through almost daily during this period of time. The storms can be relatively violent and bring wind, lightning, hail and heavy rain in amounts that reach several inches per hour. The dry season sees temperatures averaging 72 degrees with lows that rarely get into the freezing range. This season can see a noticeable drop in precipitation and which can lead to serious wildfires in the region due to lack any measurable rain.
Orlando is subject to the hurricane season during the late summer months and has had significant damage come from these storms over the years, however the city is inland and storms usually weaken after traveling several miles overland. The city has had several storms that have caused extensive damage over the years. The city does not have to fear storm surges brought about by these storms due to the fact that it sits over 100 feet above sea level, however the high winds and rain from these storms can and have caused widespread damage throughout the city.
