The city was named by Penn for the Greek words for “Brotherly Love”. During the early 1700’s Ben Franklin along with others helped the city become the center of trade and commerce in the new colonies. Before the influx of Europeans to the area Philadelphia was the home of the Lenape Indians and the village of Shackamaxon.

Philadelphia was the focal point of the American Revolution and has historical significance in America’s independence from English rule. The city saw the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the writing of the constitution of the United States of America. During the early 1800’s Philadelphia became the nation’s leading major industrial city. This distinction came from the building of an industrial infrastructure such as roads, railroads and shipping canals. Throughout the 19th century the city became a draw for major industrial companies. The city also became a draw for a very diverse population of immigrants including Irish, Germans, Russians, Italians and African Americans who had migrated from the south.
