San Diego Explored

San Diego is the ninth largest city in the United States and has a thriving economy base on agriculture, tourism, financial services, several types of manufacturing and his heavily reliant on the military.  San Diego has a rich history and is the site of many historical and national landmarks.  The city is named after Saint Didacus a Spaniard who was better known as San Diego.

San Diego History

Though San Diego has been around for centuries, the city underwent explosive growth during the California gold rush of 1948.  When California became a state in 1850 San Diego was declared the county seat of the new San Diego county and became a city the same years as California became a state.  San Diego began in the shadow of Presidio Hill but due to its distance from San Diego bay at the time the city’s main population began to move to what was called New Town on the bay.  The original site became known as Old Town San Diego which is now a State Historic Park.  The New Town area became Downtown San Diego and grew extensively from there.

San Diego has hosted two World's Fairs, one in 1915 and the other in 1935, these events lead to the city’s Balboa Park’s unique architecture which remains in the area until this day.  Due to its coastal location, the city was attractive to the Navy as early as 1901 and has retained a significant Naval presence until this day.  However, the since the end of the cold war and the cuts to the Navy and aerospace industries the city’s economy has become less reliant on Naval Operations due to the city’s focus on attracting telecommunications and biotechnology companies to the area.

San Diego About

The geography of the city gives it a very distinctive feel.  The city is spread out amongst its many canyons and mesa’s which reduces the density of many areas, creating several distinctive communities within the city.  Downtown San Diego sits on the San Diego Bay which is separated from the ocean by both Point Loma and Coronado Peninsula.  The city is also split nearly in two by the San Diego River which creates a north and south side of town.  The city boast several world famous beaches including La Jolla beach, Mission beach and Pacific beach just to name a few.

San Diego is a wonderful place to visit with its Mediterranean and semi-arid climate.  You can enjoy great weather year round that include mild winters, dry summers, which rarely get above 90degrees.  The moderate year round temperatures make San Diego and ideal vacation spot year round.

San Diego People

With its proximity to the Mexican border many would think that San Diego would have a large Hispanic population and yet the contrary is true.  Whites make up over 63% with non-Hispanic whites comprising 45% of the population and persons of Asian nationality make up almost 15% of the population with blacks accounting for less than 7% and Hispanics making up only 27% of the population.  San Diego enjoys one of the lowest crimes rates of any major city in the United States rating sixth lowest for a city with over half a million people.

San Diego has many wonderful attractions to visit and has a storied history of offering tourist several world class places to visit with the likes of Sea World, The San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park just to name a few.  The San Diego area is also rife with museums, art exhibits, parks, theaters, community playhouses and literally thousands of restaurants and clubs.  With its beautiful beaches and proximity to the ocean, the city is also a haven for surfing and skaters.

San Diego Sports

San Diego touts two Major professional sports teams in the NFL’s San Diego Chargers and the MLB’s San Diego Padres.  The city had NBA teams at two different times in its history, but both teams moved away after a few years of playing within the city. They included the San Diego Rockets (now the Houston Rockets) and the San Diego Clippers (now the Los Angeles Clippers). San Diego has the dubious distinction of being the only US city with two or more professional sports teams that has not won a single championship.

San Diego on the Move

San Diego has the perfect weather for utility cycling, however, due to its topography only the downtown area is really conducive to cycling on a utility basis.  Over 80% of the city uses automobiles for travel and urban commutes.  The city is served by mass transit systems such as buses, light rail (called the Trolley which serves mainly downtown) and Amtrak.  Navigating this city can be at times easy due to its grid system in the downtown urban areas and a bit complex in the outer city.  Though the city is served by a number of freeways, getting around town sometimes can create a challenge.  Utilizing the services of a professional chauffeured transportation or limousine service can make getting around in this city a much easier proposition.
