Scottsdale Explored
The city of Scottsdale is regarded as an upscale tourist destination and sits in the mid eastern region of the Valley of the Sun. The city has an amazing city scene and nightlife. Scottsdale is bordered by Phoenix on the west and Tempe to its south and the town of Fountain Hills to its east. Scottsdale began with meager beginnings and was originally populated by the less affluent middle class urbanites. Early in the city’s history its leaders made decisions that had a tremendous impact on its world stature today.
Scottsdale History
Scottsdale was originally settle by the Hohokam Indians that were an agricultural tribe of southwestern Indians that built a series of ancient canals that brought water into the central valley area of the Valley of the Sun. These canals were reused centuries late by European settlers who came into the area during the early 1800’s. The area prior to that was settled by the Pima Indians who settle the area to this day, though in a much more modern environment.
Two brothers purchased a six hundred and forty acre parcel of land in 1888 which would become modern day Scottsdale. Winfield and George Scott settled in the area originally named Orangedale and then later Scottsdale. The city flourished with the upgrades made to the canal system and the agricultural development that occurred over the next several years. During the late 30’s Frank Lloyd Wright moved into the area a built his “winter camp” known as Taliesin a home and school at the base of the McDowell Mountains. There are several buildings in the Scottsdale area that were designed by Mr. Wright and a major thoroughfare in Scottsdale bears his name until this day.
Scottsdale is a very narrow and lengthy city stretching from its border with Tempe in the south near the 202 freeway to its northern border some thirty miles away in the McDowell Mountains. The city is roughly six miles wide and its nearly cut in half by the Indian Bend wash that is a long dry bed river that rarely has water within its river banks. During the 1960’s however, several floods did occur which forced the federal government to assist the city in construction of a series of bridges and improvements to the river itself. The city decided that instead of constructing a concrete canal along the rivers course it would instead build a series of grass lined parks and golf courses that would channel the rivers occasional spillage out of the city. Originally this idea was balked at by the federal government, but the city insisted on the grass construction and it paid off for them in the end.
Scottsdale People
During the period of time of the city’s incorporation until the mid 70’s the city had spent a considerable amount of money on its park system and had very little money left to maintain its infrastructure. However, with the death of Mrs. McCormick the owner of the famous McCormick Ranch, the city developed the area with homes and business parks which brought much needed tax revenues into the city which changed the city’s fortunes. During that period the city began to upgrade the types of homes being built and soon became an attraction to the newly affluent which made the area a hotbed of the rich and super rich. The city began to expand and make improvements to the downtown area that further built the city’s reputation as an upscale tourist attraction.
Scottsdale’s growing tourism reputation lead to the construction of several posh resorts along the Scottsdale Road Shea corridor which further added to the city’s attraction to tourist and business alike.
